Braveheart
and Winifred do not live in cages, but they are trained to use them.
For example, each cat has their own crate with litter, food &
water, and a place to rest. Doors are left open. However,
sometimes the kittens need a "time out" and I put them in their
crate (jail) for 5 minutes. Cats need to be "instructed
immediately" and never use negative reinforcement on a cat. If
the kitten is ever hungry or thirsty or needs to use the litter box, they
can only find these things in a cage to start with (door open). I
place their cages in the living room so they can still feel like they are
part of the household when I need to close the door (i.e. delivery).

Kittens grow up playing in their
travel carrier crates to prepare them if they need to fly to their final
homes. Due to the pet therapy visits, my kittens are comfortable
traveling in their crates. In the photo above, Conan, was getting
ready to travel to Alaska. He exited the crate confident and greeted
Brenda scratching on his cardboard scratcher that fit in this larger sized
crate.
